November’s Film in Discussion: Gomorrah (2008)
At the beginning of each month, one of the writers will come up with a fairly recent film that they believe is worth seeing for any number of reasons. We will have a 3 week span to see the film and during the last week of the month, the writers, and hopefully the readers too, will share their thoughts on the film. We want to hear all of your opinions and hopefully learn from the film as well as from each other!
For November, I chose the Italian mafia film, Gomorrah (2008). It is based on the book of the same name which exposed the workings of the biggest crime organization in the world: the Camorra. The publication of the book led the author, Roberto Saviano, to be under police security 24/7 for the amount of death threats he received. Flying right under the radar in 2008, Gomorrah tells it how it is. No Godfather-romanticism here. It’s raw, terrifying, and extremely engaging. I’m very curious to see what you guys think. I’m excited to revisit it as well.
Gomorrah is out on Criterion DVD and is also available on Netflix instant watch.
